At Spirit Horse Therapeutic Arts, each piece of antler art is more than just a painting. It is a living story. Infused with brilliant colours, expressive line work, and a sense of movement, every antler becomes a natural canvas for a one-of-a-kind narrative. The antler tells the story. I simply listen and paint.
The unique shape, bumps, grooves, and lines in the bone guide the creation. I never begin with a pre-conceived idea or image in mind. Instead, I let the antler speak to me. As I trace its natural patterns, images begin to emerge, like puzzle pieces falling into place. The result is something organic, raw, and real. Art that comes alive with every stroke.
All antlers used in my work are ethically sourced and legally obtained with proper permits from the NL Wildlife Division. These permits allow for the buying, selling, possession, and export of moose and caribou antlers. Each antler is cleaned and carefully examined before any paint ever touches its surface. This stage is about connecting with the raw material and getting to know its story before it is told.
Painting on bone is not like painting on a flat canvas. The bumps, curves, and imperfections can be challenging, but they are also what make each piece so special. I use a blend of acrylic paint, mineral fusion paint, acrylic ink, and several coats of clear varnish. Fusion mineral paint has become a new favourite because it is thick enough to coat the bone smoothly and evenly, creating a strong foundation for the artwork.
I begin with a primer coat of white to help the colours stand out. When possible, I like to leave the back of the antler in its raw, natural state. I then trace the antler’s natural lines and patterns, building the foundation for the imagery to emerge.
After mapping out the linework, I apply a base coat and then layer by layer, colour by colour, the antler begins to transform. Sometimes the story calls for a brighter tone or a new direction, so I add more acrylic paint as needed. Each layer must dry before the next can begin. It is a process of patience, presence, and trust in the unfolding.
As the story starts to take shape, that is when the magic happens. The missing pieces fall into place and the antler’s unique voice begins to speak.
Once the painting is complete, several coats of clear varnish are applied to protect the artwork from the elements. The varnish also enhances the colours and adds a radiant finish. It is the final chapter of the story, the moment where everything comes together and the piece is ready to be shared.
Every Antler Has a Story
Each antler I work with carries its own energy and message. No two are the same. I am not just painting, I am listening, interpreting, and helping the antler tell its story. Through this unique art form, Spirit Horse Therapeutic Arts brings the stories of the land, the animals, and the spirit of nature into your home.
If you are curious to see these stories come to life, follow along or reach out. I would love to share this journey with you.
